Pro-Choice Excuses and the Bible's Answers
Pro-choice (pro-abortion) advocates give excuses to support abortion. The Holy Bible answers these excuses. Some excuses are given below, followed by paraphrased verses from The Bible which apply to the excuses.
Excuse-- it's not my problem:
- Women: "I've never had an abortion. I'm not pregnant now."
- Men: "I've never caused a woman to have an unwanted pregnancy."
- Both: "Abortion isn't my problem. It's a problem that a pregnant woman must solve. She, not I, must choose whether to have an abortion."
Bible's answer:
- Psalm 82:3-4: Defend the weak and the fatherless; maintain rights for the poor and oppressed; rescue the weak and needy; and deliver them from the hand of wicked persons.
- Proverbs 24:11-12: Rescue those being led to death and slaughter. If you claim ignorance of their deaths, God will know, and He will repay each person for what he or she has or has not done to help those in need.
- Proverbs 31:8-9: Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves; defend those who cannot defend themselves; and plead the cause of those in need.
- Isaiah 5:20: Woe to those who call evil good, or good evil; and who put darkness for light, or light for darkness.
- John 13:34: Jesus gave us a new commandment, that we love one another as He has loves us.
- John 8:12: Jesus is the Light of the world, to dispel the darkness of
sin.
- Matthew 5:14: Jesus' followers are lights of the world, to dispel the darkness of sin.
- Galatians 6:2: Bear each others' burdens, thereby fulfilling the law of Christ.
- James 4:17: Anyone who knows to do good but does not do it, sins.
Excuse-- "my body, my choice":
- "I own my body. No man or government can tell me what to do with my body, or choose what I do with my body. It's my body; what I do with my body is my choice– and mine alone."
Bible's answer:
- Proverbs 14:12: Some ways that seem right to man (which are opposite of the Lord's ways for life) end in death.
- Psalm 24:1: The earth and all those who dwell in it are the Lord's.
- Psalm 100:3: Know that God has made us, and not we ourselves.
- Romans 12:1: We should offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, as a spiritual act of worship.
- 1 Corinthians 3:16-17: Each person's body is God's temple, and God's Spirit lives in him or her. God's temple (a person's body) is sacred. If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him or her.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: Each person's body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives within it. No person is his or her own, but each person has been bought at a price (the price paid by Jesus Christ at His crucifixion death). Therefore, each person should honor God with his or her body.
Excuse-- it's not a baby; it's just tissue:
- "The product growing in my womb is just cells or a blob of tissue, not a baby. I can have an abortion, since I'm not destroying a human being."
Bible's answer:
- Genesis 1:26-28; 2:7: Mankind is created by God in His image, even carrying His breath of eternal life.
- Exodus 21:22-23: The penalty under the law of Moses for a person who caused even an accidental death of an unborn child (as by two men fighting) was to put to the offending person to death.
- Psalm 139:13-16: Each person is fearfully, marvelously, and wonderfully created by God, and that person's future is seen by the very eyes of God.
- Isaiah 42:5 and Acts 17:25: The life and breath of people come from God.
- Jeremiah 1:4-5: God called Jeremiah to be a prophet, even before he was conceived.
- Isaiah 49:1, 5: God called Isaiah to be a prophet, even before he was conceived.
- Genesis 25:22-23: God ordained a nation from Jacob (the Jews) and a nation from Esau (the Edomites, Arabs), while the twins were still in Rebekah's womb.
- Matthew 1:18, 22-23: God ordained that the Messiah- Jesus- would come from the womb of Mary, even before He was conceived in her.
- Luke 1:36: God ordained that John the Baptizer would be conceived in the womb of Elizabeth.
Excuse-- my pregnancy resulted from rape or incest:
- "My pregnancy resulted from rape or incest. God surely must make an exception and permit abortion, when the pregnancy results from such a sad situation."
Bible's answer:
- Exodus 23:7b: Do not kill the innocent; God will not justify the wicked.
- Deuteronomy 24:16: Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, and children shall not be put to death because of their fathers. A person shall be put to death because of his sin only.
- Proverbs 6:16-17: Of the seven things the LORD hates, one of them is hands that shed innocent blood.
- Ezekiel 18:4, 17, 20: The soul (person) who sins shall alone die for his sins. If the father sins, only he shall be punished for his sin; the son shall not be punished.
- Genesis 50:20: God can use for His good that which man meant for evil.
Excuse-- abortion is a political issue:
- "Abortion is a legal issue, an issue to be decided by our legislatures and courts. Citizens and churches shouldn't extend themselves into the political process. I believe in 'separation of church and state,' and this is a state- not a church- issue."
- "The Supreme Court has ruled abortion legal. No more needs to be said about this issue."
Bible's answer:

- Acts 5:29: We must obey God's laws, rather than man's laws.
- 1 Timothy 6:20-21: God's ways are entrusted to His children. Rebuke godless chatter, false knowledge [literally, false science], and those who have fallen from faith.
- Jude 3: Contend (fight) for the faith, that has been entrusted to the saints [members of Christ's Church].
Excuse-- a baby is a burden:
- "This isn't a baby I'm carrying- it's a burden. I don't want this baby."
Bible's answer:
- Psalm 127:3: Children are a heritage and a reward from God.
- Psalm 139:13-16: God Himself has fashioned the baby in your womb for a purpose known only to Him; your baby has a purpose intended by God.

- John 9:1-3: As Jesus passed a blind man, He was asked whether the man or his parents had sinned [to cause his blindness]. Jesus answered that the blindness did not result from anyone's sin, but the man was blind that the works of God might be revealed in him.
- Romans 15:1: We who are strong should bear the infirmities of the weak, not just please ourselves.
- 1 Corinthians 1:27: God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame mighty things.
Excuse-- a right to choose death:
- "As this fetus' mother, I have the right to choose to have it aborted (even though it will kill the fetus)."
Bible's answer:
- Genesis 9:6: Whoever kills a person, his or her life shall be required, because man is made in the image of God.

Very important Scriptures to remember:
As important as the preceding Scriptures are, there are also important Scriptures to
remind you that God loves you- regardless of any sin you have committed; that He has provided a mechanism for your sins to be forgiven (and forgotten!); and that once your sins are forgiven, you should no longer feel guilt because your heritage in this life is joy, happiness, and productive work. These Scriptures of promise, hope, and redemption are included in other sections of this Web site-
